The Sundays – Skin and Bones

I had a big love affair with Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. Released in 1990, there was something about it that was fresh and slightly different to other jangle pop records around at the time. Harriet Wheeler has one of those instantly identifiable voices, like Tracey Thorn or Hope Sandoval, and sings in her natural English twang which warms me even more to their sound. The main reason I loved this record though was David Gavurin’s guitar, he seemed to have a knack for picking out unusual notes, weird angular riffs, interesting chords with a delay laden tone that works so well with Harriet’s voice. Still one of my favourite guitar players.
